The Pearl by John Steinbeck

I think the pearl has many smybols from many different people in the book so far ranging from greed to pretty much nothing.

For Kino, he believes this pearl could bring him so much. He fantaizes getting married in a church with new, beautiful, white clothing. He hopes his son, Coyotito being cured by the doctor and being able to afford it. He sees Coyotito going to school, reading books and being well educated. And last of all, he dreams of having his very own rifle like every white man has.

Juana, on the other hand is the total opposite of Kino. Of course at first she was delighted she could heal her first born with the pearl but then she looked deeper into what the pearl has brought to her and realized she really didn't want to keep the pearl. Ever since Kino discovered the pearl Juana has acted very calm and nothing like Kino did. I suppose Juana is happy and satisfied with the life she already has, she doesn't want anything to change and when someone tried to break into their house last night she decided she really did not want the pearl and she believes that the pearl with destroy them. She begs Kino to get rid of it but of course, he refuses.

The doctor so far in this story is an absolutely terrible, cruel, greedy and racist man. At first, he did not want to treat Coyotito because he was an Indian baby and the doctor believed Indians were just animals. Kino also could not afford the bill. But, after the news about Kino and the great pearl the doctor believed he could get a very big profit from this and decide to help. This really shows how a hateful and bitter man the doctor really is.

The neighbors of Kino I suppose could be really more supportive and be happy for him rather than being so jealous they actually hate him. Kino was going through a really difficult time and it was a very amazing miracle he found that pearl so I believe the neighbors should put their jealousy behind them and be happy Kino can help save his son. I bet Kino would be happy for them if the situations were reversed.

When I think of the priest of this story and what he represents I can't come up with a particular word. I guess he's just doing what he's suppose to be doing of help bringing money to the church but i believe he did it in a wrong way. I don't think he should've went to Kino's house and remind him of donating money to the church. That kind of makes me see him as a greedy man too because donating is a thing you should be able to decide yourself and not have to be reminded to. But, I also think it was kind of him to give his blessings and warnings to Kino about the pearl and what it could possibly bring.

The townspeople in this story I believe are bitter people. I think they're just as jealous as any of the people Kino is close to and want to take it from just as much even if its to help save his son. They should just let it go and stop gossiping or trying to mess up Kino's fortune with this pearl. Greed is a perfect word to be representing almost all of the people listed above. Who knew a pearl could bring out so much ugly in people?

  3. Wow! I've read it a few times out of curiosity to see if I'd like it as much as I did before, and in fact, I have. If I never read the story and read this, I wouldn't even have to. Not that you are just retelling the story, you are just giving so much detail that informs me on everything in the novel, and it doesn't even get boring! Great job. Love the picture, too, by the way. :)

  4. Your writing just blew me away!
You hit the nail on the head with this. The way you told the symbolism was perfect. You made it interesting and fun but yet it was serious. You can really tell that you were listening to the story. I can't wait to read what you write about the Christmas Carol!
    :))
